Bloomberg Philanthropies invests in 700 cities and 150 countries around the world to ensure better, longer lives for the greatest number of people. We focus on five key areas for creating lasting change: the Arts , Education , Environment , Government Innovation , and Public Health , in addition to special Founder’s Projects . Bloomberg Philanthropies encompasses all of Michael R. Bloomberg’s giving, including corporate, foundation, and personal philanthropy, as well as Bloomberg Associates , a pro bono consultancy that works in cities around the world. Mike has committed the vast majority of the profits from Bloomberg L.P. , the global financial technology, data, and media company that he founded in 1981, to support the work of Bloomberg Philanthropies. In 2022, we distributed $1.7 billion globally. Over his lifetime, Mike has given $14.4 billion to philanthropy. Nearly 450 students have now graduated. Explore Chile Ocean Conservation in Chile With support from our partners, local authorities in Chile established a new marine protected area, the Pisagua Sea, that covers over 181,000 acres. Globally, we have helped protect 10.8 million square miles of ocean. Explore Colombia Road Safety in Colombia With our partners, we supported the passage of a landmark national road safety law that will help reduce urban speed limits and strengthen vehicle safety standards. Explore Denver Asphalt Art in Denver Denver is one of more than 60 cities where we supported asphalt art projects to enliven streets and improve safety. The city transformed an intersection at the heart of one of its oldest neighborhoods. Explore Mexico City Tobacco Control in Mexico City After 10 years of advocacy from our partners, Mexico became the latest country to ban smoking in indoor public places, bringing the total number of countries with smoke-free laws to 139. Explore Minnesota Clean Energy Transition in Minnesota We helped close 12 of the state’s 15 coal plants, including one that will now become one of the world’s largest battery storage sites. We have retired 70% of plants nationwide. Explore New York City Summer Learning in New York City Our summer learning program in New York City, called Summer Boost, reached more than 16,000 K-8 charter school students across the five boroughs. Explore Philadelphia Public Health Summit in Philadelphia The 2022 Bloomberg American Health Summit brought together over 400 public health leaders and advocates to discuss major threats to U.S. health and life expectancy. Explore São Paulo City Innovation in São Paulo The success of São Paulo’s winning idea in the 2016 Mayors Challenge, which connected farmers with local markets to grow their earnings and improve sustainability, has spurred 77 cities to replicate the program. D.C. charter schools that we have supported are set to open more than 3,000 new seats in the coming years, as part of our national effort to open 150,000 new charter seats by 2026. Explore Amsterdam CityLab in Amsterdam We convened over 500 mayors and city innovators at Bloomberg CityLab, where we also launched a program to help 10 cities create safer, more interconnected bike lanes and infrastructure.
